They love Walkmans in Japan. So much so that Sony’s Walkman line has temporarily passed the iPod for sales in Japan again, according to researchers at BCN. Players like the S640 helped Sony slide past in August with 47.8 percent of sales where Apple dropped to 44 percent. The Walkman ...

Sharkoon X-Tatic Digital Headset Review

This post is syndicated with permission from GamerFront.net

In the past few weeks I've had the pleasure of testing the new X-Tatic Digital Headset Sharkoon. This is a gaming headset that delivers full Dolby 5.1 surround sound directly from your PS3 or Xbox 360 console to your hungry little holes right ear. I liked the headset despite its large size and huge amount of wiring that goes with it. So kicking off the investigation, let's start talking about hardware.

The X-Tatic Digital 5.1 surround sound headset plug, 8 speakers (4 in each earpiece). It comes together with an amplifier box that illuminates itself for multi-channel volume control. It has a digital in-line volume control, and comes with a detachable microphone Quickon connection. The headset is quite large, and the 360 cm length of the cable is tilting the charts too.

The entire arrangement is connected to your console itself, so if the sound is funneled right into your ears. Just as an FYI, though, the headset is compatible with your PC, DVD player, HiFi or other device you may have. The headset is built to a perfect sound quality to be delivered to the players, and focuses on providing the most realistic gaming experience.

Now look at the quality.

The earpieces of the headset around your whole ear, so a lot of outside noise is neutralized. I found myself constantly heckled by others in the office because I could not hear them speaking to me, next to my desk. The sound quality is great. I heard every shot, every scream, every rotation of the tire all the way down to every piece of dirt that hit the battlefield. This headset is really directed at you sitting in the driver's seat. Compatibility with the surround sound I could hear everything around me. I literally felt like I was in the game.

Since the headset is also compatible with the chat functions of the PS3 and Xbox 360, I was also able to hear the voice of my comrades as in battle. The voices came from the center channel, so they were always clear and concise. At times when I have to run the center channel up so I could hear my friends online about the sounds of the game, but it was not enough to be annoying.

The kit is wired through a 5.1 enclosure that you have to connect to the console and in the wall for power. On the right side of the box, as shown above, are dedicated buttons for power and volume. These buttons are also backlit so you can see in the dark. In order to tack back on you will need to ensure that the power button on the control box is pressed. Glorious in my ignorance I forgot to make sure of this, when I first plugged in, so I, of course, thought it did not work.

You must ensure that the settings on your console for the digital output for sound. Once the settings are correct, and you have the rig set up properly you're good to go. The setup, although physically a bit stressed, is surprisingly simple. The package contains a manual, so there is not much cause for concern.

The only real problems I ran with the headset were that the dialogue for a few games were a bit static, continually and the headset on my ears warm. While playing Killzone 2 on PS3, some of the dialogue has been cut due to the surround sound. I have corrected this, however, by turning the center channel. Since the headset has a box along the main wiring that allows you to choose the volume for each channel, this was no problem for a long time. The more I wore the headset, the more my ears are still warm. The earpieces are covered with a sort of suede that is comfortable, but it keeps you warm. I do not know about you all, but when I game, really hard game. So the longer I played, the hotter I became. I had the headset to take a vacation very often, but as every gamer knows, frequent breaks are always good, so this kind of balanced.

Overall I quite enjoyed this headset. It took my gaming to another level, an exceptionally beautiful. The Sharkoon X-Tatic Digital Gaming Headset is a perfect accessory for any hardcore gamer, and each of those who want their gaming experience to do more in depth. Want to pick a few of these BadBoys for yourself, turn to $ 159.99. For that price, this is what you get in the package:

  • X-Tatic Digital 5.1 headset
  • Microphone
  • Cable Adapter (9-pin analog connector> 3 x 3.5 mm
  • X-Tatic Sound Control Unit
  • USB Microphone Cable for PS3 and PC
  • Power Adapter
  • Microphone cable for the Xbox 360 (jack 2.5 mm> 2.5 mm jack)
  • Optical cable (S / PDIF)
  • Manual (11 languages)

I would definitely recommend this headset to any gamer who wants the experience of most of their gaming sessions. For more information you can head to the Sharkoon website. For now I have it back and go back to my game!
